Why it matters

One code, three jobs.

A PIN code isn't just an address suffix — it's the routing key that gets a parcel, a cheque, or a ration card to the right sorting office.

Delivery & e-commerce

Every checkout page uses your PIN to work out delivery zones, courier partners, and cash-on-delivery eligibility before it even asks for your city.

KYC & banking

Bank account opening, Aadhaar updates, and insurance forms all validate your address against the official PIN register to catch typos and mismatches.

🏛

Government records

Ration cards, voter rolls, and census data are tied to PIN-linked jurisdictions — which is why the office name, not just the number, matters.

How to read a PIN

Six digits, decoded from left to right.

India's PIN system was introduced in 1972 by Shri Sriram Bhikaji Velankar. Every digit narrows the location further than the last.

Digit 1 — the region

Splits the country into 9 zones (1–8 for geographic regions, 9 reserved for the Army Postal Service). It's the broadest sort — think of it as the shelf in the sorting hall.

Digit 2 — the sub-region

Narrows the zone to a cluster of states or a large postal circle, grouping mail before it's routed further.

Digit 3 — the sorting district

Combined with the first two digits, this identifies the specific sorting district that handles onward delivery.

Digits 4, 5 & 6 — the office

These pin down the exact post office — Head Office, Sub Office, or Branch Office — responsible for final delivery.

Office types

HO, SO, BO — what's the difference?

Every entry in the register carries a type stamp. Here's what each one means on the ground.

HO

Head Office

The main post office for a district or town — administers the Sub and Branch Offices under it, and usually offers the full range of postal and banking services.

SO

Sub Office

A full-service post office reporting to a Head Office — typically found in a locality, market, or institution, and often the office your building's PIN actually maps to.

BO

Branch Office

The smallest unit, usually in a village or rural cluster, reporting to a Sub Office — the last link in the delivery chain.

Search tips

Getting the result you want, faster.

  • Typing digits searches PIN codes directly — you don't need the full 6 digits, the first 2–3 will show every code in that area.
  • Typing letters searches post office names, districts, and states together — try "Andheri" or "Coimbatore" rather than a full address.
  • If you get too many rows, add a district or state name to your search to narrow it down.
  • Government forms usually want the Sub Office (SO) or Head Office (HO) name, not a Branch Office, unless you're in a rural area.
  • One PIN code often maps to several post offices — check the office name column, not just the number, before submitting a form.
  • Army Post Office (APO) PINs start with 9 and don't map to a fixed geographic place.
