Every other PIN code in India tells you something about where a place is. Type a code starting with 9 into a general address lookup, though, and you won't find a town, a street, or a district — because that code was never meant to describe a place at all. It describes a soldier, wherever they happen to be posted.

Zone 9: reserved, not geographic

Recall that the first digit of a PIN assigns one of nine postal zones, eight of which cover defined geographic regions of India. The ninth was set aside from the start for the Army Postal Service (APS) — the postal wing that handles mail for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel, particularly those serving in field areas, remote postings, or overseas deployments where a normal civilian address doesn't exist.

This is the detail that surprises people: an APS PIN doesn't shift when the soldier is transferred to a different base or posted overseas. The whole point of the system is that the code stays tied to the person's unit, and the Army Postal Service handles the actual physical redirection behind the scenes — the sender never needs to know exactly where their letter or parcel physically ends up.

How an APO address actually works

A typical Army Post Office address doesn't look like a civilian one. Instead of a locality and city, it's built around a unit name or a numbered Field Post Office (FPO) designation, followed by a 900000-series PIN. The Army Postal Service — which functions as a distinct wing but is staffed and trained in coordination with India Post — takes over from there, routing the item through military channels rather than the regular civilian sorting network.

This separation exists for reasons that go beyond convenience. Field postings can be sensitive, remote, or classified in ways that make publishing a literal geographic location inappropriate. Keeping addressing unit-based rather than location-based lets mail keep reaching someone even as their unit moves, without ever requiring senders — or, for that matter, a public PIN code register — to know the operational location.

A system with its own history

The Army Postal Service predates the modern PIN code system by decades — its origins trace back to postal units supporting British Indian Army operations in the early 20th century, later reorganised into the modern Corps of Signals-adjacent structure that serves independent India's armed forces. When the civilian PIN system launched in 1972, folding APS addressing into the same six-digit numbering scheme, under a reserved zone, was a natural way to make Army mail machine- and clerk-readable alongside everything else, without exposing operational detail.

What this means if you're searching a register

If you come across a 900000-series PIN in a directory — including this one — don't expect a district or state to make ordinary sense next to it in the way it would for a civilian code. Entries like these are typically tagged administratively (sometimes to a nominal circle such as "APS Circle") rather than tied to a real district, precisely because the whole design goal was to keep the physical location out of the public record.
